Custom Marine & Boat Labels
On a boat, everything lives behind a hatch, and in a hurry nobody remembers which one. These labels name lockers, cubbies and parts bins in heavy white lettering, so crew and guests can find the life jackets, first aid kit and spare impeller fast. They are meant for dry, shaded storage inside the boat and in the boat shop, not for the deck or the exterior.
What to label on a boat
Start with safety gear, because guests need to find it without asking: Life Jackets, Flares, First Aid and Fire Ext on the inside of the lockers or cabin doors where they are stowed. Then label the spares people dig for under way: Impellers, Fuel Filters, Fuses, Bulbs, Zincs and Hose Clamps. Fishing boats get Tackle, Lures, Hooks and Leaders on drawers and trays.
A label points to where gear is kept. It does not replace any safety equipment placards, markings or carriage requirements that apply to your vessel.
Fiberglass and aluminum boats need adhesive, not magnets
Most recreational boats are fiberglass or aluminum, and neither is magnetic. Teak, marine plywood, plastic hatches and 316 stainless hardware are not magnetic either. On a boat, the 3M VHB adhesive backing is the usual choice; it is semi-permanent, so clean the surface and place it carefully.
Keep magnetic labels well away from the compass and electronic heading sensors, since any magnet nearby can throw off the reading. Magnets are a good fit in the marina workshop and on steel-hulled boats: steel tool chests, parts cabinets and shelving all hold our exposed N52 magnets firmly.
Honest limits: sun, heat, water and salt air
These labels are PLA plastic. They are not waterproof and not rated for submersion, so keep them inside dry lockers rather than in bilges, wet lockers that flood, or anywhere they sit in standing water. PLA softens around 55 to 60C, which a dark deck or dashboard in summer sun can easily reach, and long UV exposure fades the color. That is why we say inside, dry and shaded.
The magnets are nickel-plated neodymium. In salt air, nickel plating can corrode over time, especially where salt spray reaches. VHB-mounted labels inside the cabin avoid that problem. Wipe labels with a damp cloth or mild cleaner, and rinse salt off with fresh water.
Color coding the boat and the boat shop
Cobalt Blue suits most boats, Workshop Red marks safety gear clearly, and Heritage Black works for engine spares and tools. Each order prints in one color, so place one order per color; each has its own 5-label minimum.

Marine & Boat label questions
Do magnetic labels stick to a fiberglass or aluminum boat?
No. Fiberglass, aluminum, teak and most marine stainless are not magnetic. Choose the 3M VHB adhesive backing option in the builder for use inside the boat.
Are these boat labels waterproof?
No. They are PLA plastic and are not rated for submersion or constant spray. Use them in dry, shaded lockers and cabins, not on the deck or exterior.
Will the magnets rust in salt air?
The magnets are nickel-plated, and salt air can corrode the plating over time. Keep magnetic labels in dry storage or the shore workshop, and use VHB adhesive labels aboard.
Can a magnetic label affect my boat compass?
Yes, any magnet near a compass can affect its reading. Keep magnetic labels well away from the compass and heading sensors, or use the VHB adhesive option near the helm.
How fast do custom boat labels ship?
They are printed to order in Oregon and ship in 3 to 5 business days with free US shipping.
