Custom Makerspace & 3D Printing Labels

A makerspace has a lot of people and not much memory of where things go. These labels name filament shelves, printer stations, shared tool walls and member project bins in heavy white lettering on a solid color, so the next person can find the PETG and put the calipers back. They are 3D printed themselves, so you already know what they are made of.

What to label in a makerspace or print farm

Start with filament storage, sorted by material: PLA, PETG, ABS, ASA, TPU and Nylon each get a shelf or dry box, plus a spot for Open Spools and Empty Spools so half-used rolls do not vanish. Then number the printer farm: Printer 1 through Printer 6 on the shelf edge makes queue sheets, maintenance logs and help requests unambiguous.

On shared tool walls and benches, label by station and add a Return Here label at every spot where people grab and wander off: calipers, the good flush cutters, the multimeter, the soldering station. Member project bins and a Scrap bin round it out.

Magnets or adhesive on printer shelves and tool walls

Steel wire shelving, metal pegboard, steel cabinets and tool chests all hold our exposed N52 magnets firmly, and you can move labels around as the space gets rearranged. That matters in a makerspace, where the layout changes every few months.

Most printer frames are aluminum extrusion, which is not magnetic, and the same goes for hardboard pegboard, plywood, acrylic enclosures and plastic storage bins. For those, pick the 3M VHB adhesive backing in the builder. It is semi-permanent, so place it where the label will stay.

Keep labels off heated beds and hot enclosures

These labels are PLA, the same plastic you print with, and it softens around 55 to 60C. Do not stick a label on a heated bed, a hot end carriage, the inside of an enclosure printing ABS or ASA, or next to a filament dryer vent. Shelf edges, rack uprights and the outside of a cool enclosure door are fine. Laser cutter rooms are fine too; just keep labels clear of the cutting bed itself.

Color and font choices that work for members

Each order prints in one color. A common layout is Heritage Black for printers and filament, Cobalt Blue for electronics, and Workshop Red for tools that must come back. Place one order per color; each order has its own 5-label minimum.

Block is a strong default for bold shelf labels. Condensed fits longer words like Build Plates and Electronics, and Hyperlegible keeps I, l and 1 distinct, which helps on numbered printers and bins.

Makerspace & 3D Printing label sets

Ready-made sets of the words this trade labels most, grouped by where they go. Each set opens in the builder with every label in place; add, remove or retype any of them before you order.

Filament Shelf labels

Magnetic 3d printer filament shelf labels. Shelf labels for the filament rack, sorted by material so members grab PETG for a part that needs it instead of whatever spool is closest. Separate open spools and the dry box from sealed stock.

Printer Farm Rack labels

Magnetic printer farm rack labels. Number every printer on the farm rack and give spare nozzles, hot ends and build plates a labeled bin. Finished and Failed shelves stop prints piling up on top of the machines.

Print Queue Board labels

Magnetic 3d print queue whiteboard labels. Field labels for the print queue whiteboard. Members write their name, file, printer, material and start time beside each header, and status magnets show which jobs are ready for pickup or on hold.

Electronics Bench labels

Magnetic electronics workbench drawer labels. Drawer and bin labels for the shared electronics bench: solder, flux, heat shrink, passives and boards. A Return Here label on the meter shelf does more than any sign about putting tools back.

Makerspace & 3D Printing label questions

Do magnetic labels stick to 3D printer frames?

Usually not. Most printer frames are aluminum extrusion, which is not magnetic. Use the 3M VHB adhesive option on frames and enclosures, and magnets on steel wire shelving, metal pegboard and steel cabinets.

How should I label filament storage by material?

Give each material its own shelf or dry box label: PLA, PETG, ABS, ASA, TPU and Nylon, plus Open Spools and Empty Spools. Short labels stay big and readable from across the room.

Can I put these labels on a printer enclosure or heated bed?

Not on the heated bed or inside a hot enclosure. The labels are PLA and soften around 55 to 60C. The outside of a cool enclosure door or the shelf below the printer is a better spot.

Why buy printed labels if we own 3D printers?

You can certainly print your own. Ours save the design and tuning time: consistent heavy lettering, exposed N52 magnets already set flush, and a 1-Year Hold Guarantee if one fails under normal use.

How fast do makerspace labels ship?

They are printed to order in Oregon and ship in 3 to 5 business days with free US shipping.
