Custom Lab & Science Labels

A shared lab runs on everyone putting things back where they belong. These labels name each cabinet, drawer and shelf in heavy white lettering on Cobalt Blue, Heritage Black or Workshop Red, so students, techs and visiting researchers find the 250mL flasks without opening six doors. They are made for school science rooms, teaching labs and research labs alike.

What to label first in a teaching or research lab

Start with the storage people open most and get wrong most: glassware drawers (Beakers, Flasks, Cylinders, Test Tubes, Pipettes), consumables (Gloves, Pipette Tips, Weigh Boats, Petri Dishes) and the equipment board or shelf where shared tools live (Balances, Centrifuge, Microscopes). In a school science room, add supply bins for each unit, such as Batteries, Magnets, Wires and Rock Samples, so student helpers can restock without asking.

Keep each label to one or two words. A 34mm tall label with short text stays big enough to read from the lab bench across the room. Our Hyperlegible font keeps I, l and 1 distinct, which helps when a label sits next to a sample number or a shelf code.

Which lab surfaces are magnetic, and which need adhesive

Many lab storage cabinets, flammables cabinets, lockers and wall rails are painted steel, and our exposed N52 magnets grip those hard. That makes them easy to move when a course changes or a cabinet gets reassigned to a new project.

Fume hoods, benches and casework vary a lot. Epoxy resin and phenolic bench tops, wood casework, glass sash and most 304 or 316 stainless steel are not magnetic. Test with a fridge magnet first. For anything that does not hold a magnet, pick the 3M VHB adhesive backing in the builder; it is semi-permanent, so choose its spot carefully.

Honest limits: chemicals, heat and cleaning

These labels are PLA plastic. We do not claim any chemical resistance, so keep them on cabinet doors and shelf edges rather than inside a fume hood or anywhere solvents, acids or bleach can splash them. PLA softens around 55 to 60C, so keep labels away from ovens, hot plates, drying ovens, steam lines and autoclaves. Wipe them with a damp cloth or mild cleaner.

A storage label is an organizing tool, not a safety sign. Labels that read Acids, Bases or Solvents help people find the right cabinet, but they do not replace the hazard labeling, SDS binders and signage your institution or regulator requires. Use them alongside that system, not instead of it.

Color coding a shared lab

Each order prints in one color, so many labs use color by room zone: Cobalt Blue for glassware and consumables, Heritage Black for equipment and instruments, and Workshop Red for waste, spill kits and reagent storage. Place one order per color; each order has its own 5-label minimum.

Lab & Science label sets

Ready-made sets of the words this trade labels most, grouped by where they go. Each set opens in the builder with every label in place; add, remove or retype any of them before you order.

Glassware Drawers labels

Magnetic lab glassware drawer labels. Drawer labels for glassware and small vessels, so beakers, flasks and cylinders go back where the next person expects them. Large text reads across the bench without opening every drawer.

Reagent Shelving labels

Magnetic chemical reagent shelf labels. Shelf labels that keep reagent families apart: acids away from bases, oxidizers away from solvents. Mark the waste and flammables shelves as clearly as the stock so nobody shelves a bottle by guesswork.

Bench Consumables labels

Magnetic lab bench consumables labels. Bin labels for the everyday consumables a bench burns through: tips, gloves by size, weigh boats, stir bars and tubes. Restocking goes faster when every bin says what belongs in it.

Equipment Board labels

Magnetic lab equipment status board labels. Field and status labels for the instrument whiteboard. Write who has the centrifuge and when the balance was last calibrated beside each header, and move Out of Order onto a unit the moment it goes down.

School Science Room labels

Magnetic school science classroom cabinet labels. Cabinet labels for a school science room, sized so students can find goggles and put the balances back without asking. Magnetic labels move when the cabinets get reorganized each year.

How ordering works

  1. Pick your words. Tap suggestions, start from a pack, or type your own. Set a quantity for each label.
  2. Choose color and font. Workshop Red, Heritage Black or Cobalt Blue, with a live preview measured to the millimeter.
  3. We print and ship. Each set is 3D-printed to order in Oregon and ships in 3 to 5 business days, free in the US.

Pricing

The same price as our custom order page: $13.99 for the first 5 labels, $2.00 for each label after that, with a 5-label minimum. Big orders get cheaper: extra labels past 25 drop to $1.75 and past 50 to $1.50. There is no maximum order size. Magnets are included. Adhesive backing (3M VHB, for non-magnetic surfaces) is an optional add-on; its price is confirmed at order and is not included in the prices above.

Lab & Science label questions

Do magnetic labels stick to lab cabinets and fume hoods?

They stick firmly to painted steel cabinets, lockers and flammables cabinets. Fume hoods, epoxy or phenolic benches, wood casework and most stainless steel are not magnetic, so choose the 3M VHB adhesive option for those.

Are these labels chemical resistant?

We do not claim chemical resistance. They are PLA plastic, so mount them on cabinet doors and shelf edges away from splashes, and keep them out of fume hoods and away from solvents and strong cleaners.

Can I put these labels in an autoclave or near a drying oven?

No. PLA softens around 55 to 60C, so the labels are not autoclavable and should stay away from drying ovens, hot plates and steam. Wipe them clean with a damp cloth instead.

Do these labels meet chemical storage labeling rules?

No. They are organizing labels, not hazard communication labels. Keep using the container labels, SDS and signage your institution requires, and use these to show people where things belong.

What font is easiest to read in a science classroom?

Hyperlegible, which was designed for low vision and keeps I, l and 1 distinct. Combined with 34mm tall labels, it reads clearly from student benches across the room.
